About Thom
My artistic journey mirrors the diverse landscapes of my upbringing. Born in the vibrant city of Midtown Kansas City, Missouri, and later transitioning to the more serene Independence, Missouri, my early life reflects a blend of urban energy and suburban calm. As the youngest of nine siblings, I grew up in a uniquely intertwined family dynamic where nieces and nephews felt more like brothers and sisters. This vibrant and complex family life would later shape my distinctive artistic voice.
A transformative moment for me occurred during a school field trip to the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art. At ten years old, I was captivated by the work of Degas and Pissarro, realizing then my deep passion for art. This interest was nurtured within a family that valued creativity, engaging in pursuits like knitting, crocheting, sewing, and sketching.
My educational journey was as diverse as my interests. After earning a GED, I pursued an Associate of Occupational Studies in personal training and obtained certifications as a medication technician and a Certified Nursing Assistant. My ventures included securing a cosmetology license and operating a salon in Midtown Kansas City. Despite my professional commitments, my passion for art remained, as I explored painting techniques through high school classes and self-study in oil, watercolor, and acrylics, underscoring my commitment to artistic development.
At 16, I embarked on an unconventional path by joining the Army, where I trained in personnel administration, nuclear weapons, and military police. This experience introduced me to various facets of life, including marriage, parenthood, and significant loss. My first husband, a partner of 17 years, passed away due to HIV-induced dementia. This poignant period, along with my role as a caregiver, profoundly influenced my emotional and artistic expression. Now legally married to a man I love very, very much and residing in a peaceful small town, I find inspiration in simplicity, which fuels my creativity.
For me, art draws from the vibrancy of everyday life. Sources of inspiration include the world around me, whether it's a fleeting sound, the moonlit contours of my husband's face, or my daughter's joyful voice. My subject matter serves as a launching point, transitioning into a spirited dance of color on canvas that reflects my inner emotional landscape.
My creative process is anchored in conveying emotion. Decisions about substrate selection and color temperature, whether warm or cool, are integral to my compositions. My work offers unique perspectives, exploring hidden narratives in everyday moments, as seen in thoughtful pieces like "Down Below" and the introspective "3:01 AM."
A particularly rewarding aspect of my portfolio is a series on Norse pagan mythology, allowing me to visually express elemental essence with evocative imagery. Drawing inspiration from the great masters, my process is deeply influenced by color and the tactile nature of paint, forming a crucial component of my artistic voice.
Although my work has yet to be featured in galleries I was featured in “Vantage KC,” a publication featuring area entrepreneurs. My art resonates with viewers and is celebrated for its beauty and vibrant colors. Now retired, I dedicate my time entirely to my art, complemented by hobbies like bonsai and aquarium keeping. For me, art is a personal journey—a living canvas reflecting my values and growth, with the ultimate goal of remaining true to my essence. I view art as a societal tool, encouraging reflection and fostering deeper connections with the human experience.
